Periods aren't exactly a fun time for most women, and menstrual cramps only worsen the situation. At-home and over-the-counter remedies can help ease the pain, and as of late, naturopathic doctor and author of "Period Repair Manual" Dr. Lara Briden recommends magnesium as the key to easier periods.
According to Dr. Briden, magnesium has nervine properties that calm the nervous system, which can help with period-related symptoms. A study published in the International Journal of Women's Health and Reproduction Sciences found that a 300mg dose of magnesium effectively reduces the severity of cramps.
Dr. Briden adds that magnesium deficiency in women could cause contractions in the body's smooth muscles and increase period pain. The best way to get magnesium is by eating foods such as leafy greens, almonds, legumes, and whole wheat; you can also take magnesium supplements, but consult a doctor first.
